Coronavirus (COVID19) Catch-up Premium
Children and young people across the country have experienced unprecedented disruption to their education as a result of coronavirus (COVID-19). Those from the most vulnerable and disadvantaged backgrounds will be among those hardest hit.
The government has announced £1 billion of funding to support children and young people to catch up. This includes a one-off universal £650 million catch-up premium for the 2020 to 2021 academic year to ensure that schools have the support they need to help all pupils make up for lost teaching time.
This funding will replace Year 7 Catch-up funding and we will report on its use when data is available.
Literacy Catch-up Premium 2019
Last academic year our intake of Year 7 students followed a bespoke in-house catch up literacy scheme, ‘The Kid in the 10 Shirt’, that embeds all of the crucial skills required to comfortably access the KS3 curriculum. The scheme includes a fiction book containing all of the recommended KS2 vocabulary and a 40+ hour scheme of work that has been endorsed by literacy specialist, Geoff Barton. Data confirms that Moat students avoided the national Year 7 dip as 69% of the cohort achieved the equivalent of reading age of 11+ in their Year 6 SATs and, after 4 weeks of the scheme, 73% of the students had a reading age of 11+. All Year 7 students who have a reading age below 11 are being catered for with targeted catch up intervention that involves a collaboration between the English department, learning support and SLT.
