Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. During this time, fasting takes place between dawn and sunset, meaning no eating or drinking during daylight hours.

The dates of Ramadan change every year because Islam follows a lunar calendar based on the Moon’s cycles.

In the UK, Ramadan in 2026 is expected to begin on the evening of Tuesday 17th February and end on Wednesday 18th or Thursday 19th March, depending on the sighting of the crescent moon.

Fasting during Ramadan allows a focus on the poor and needy, time to pray, reflect and be thankful, an opportunity to practice self-discipline and build character.

Fasting is not required for children, the elderly, pregnant women, or those who are ill or travelling.

A pre-dawn meal is usually consumed, called suhoor and the fast is broken at sunset with iftar.

It is a month centred on reflection, compassion, and community.

We send our best wishes to students, staff and parents who are observing the Holy Month of Ramadan.
