Moat Community College aims to be an inclusive school which offers a high standard of education to all students, whatever their Special Educational Needs or Disability (SEND) At Moat we believe every teacher is a Special Needs teacher and lessons are accessible to all our students.
SEND can mean physical or mental health issues, as well as learning difficulties.
SEND provision covers the following areas of need:
- Cognition and learning
- Communication and interaction
- Sensory or physical
- Social, emotional or mental health (SEMH)
The main ways that the department supports students:
Specialist teachers and learning support assistants work alongside classroom teachers to support students with special educational needs and disabilities.
We offer smaller withdrawal groups with specialist teachers to teach English and Maths to students who need a different learning environment.
We can provide one to one sessions for students who need support in understanding social situations, or students who need intensive support with their learning.
We offer a lunchtime club for vulnerable students to play games, read books or do homework. This is staffed by Learning Support Assistants and teachers.
We offer students help with forming friendships; including social skills based small group work.
We work in partnership with other agencies such as Psychology Services, Hearing Support and Visual Support teams, Autism team, Speech and Language support and the Virtual School. We also work with advisory teachers for the Roma, Gypsy and Traveller communities.
Working in partnership with parents
Moat works with our parents to ensure the best outcome for families of children with SEND. If you have any concerns, please contact the SENCO, Mr Saunders on 0116 2625705
We are developing our provision map to ensure our students get the support they need.
Access Arrangements allow all our students with special needs, or a disability, to access examinations.
An access arrangement can be an adult to read and/or write for a student in an exam. A student may be given a longer time period in which to complete the exam. A specialist assessor will assess students to see if they qualify for an access arrangement.
