Community Cuts

Services and Buildings at Risk

In Leicester, there are a number of libraries, youth and community centres that are being threatened by closure.

We spoke to Moat Principal Brian Killeen about the effect this might have on students.

Officials say they are seeking peoples’ opinions before they draw up any proposals but there are 11 buildings in the east and middle of the city centre that will be affected.

Some of these building include the African Caribbean Centre and Highfields library.

The African Caribbean Centre offers a variety of classes, social activities and special events for people of all ages.

The Highfields library has books to borrow, free access to computers and information. Free tutoring, homework help programs, and summer reading programs for kids and teens help bridge the economic divide that impacts students’ academic performance.

Ultimately, these facilities are a vital part of our community with even more positive outcomes and they should be allowed to continue as they are.
